Florida’s Food Editors: Cooking in the 1950s and 1960s

Location: Orange County Regional History Center, Orlando

Throughout the 1960s, the Florida women’s page editors were setting the standard across the country. They were regularly giving lectures to other women’s page editors and dominated the Penney-Missouri Awards – the top journalism prize for the sections. This time period was described by Marjorie Paxson, Miami Herald and later St. Petersburg Times women’s page journalist, as the “golden era” for women’s pages. This talk will be about women’s page editors including Marie Anderson, Roberta Applegate, Beverley Morales, Edee Greene, Dorothy Jurney, and Billie O’Day.

Kimberly Wilmot Voss, PHD is an associate professor and area coordinator of Journalism at the University of Central Florida. Join Dr. Kimberly Voss as she takes you behind the scenes of the lives of women editors in the ’60s. Call 407.836.7010 to register. Non-members $15, members free.

A Night for Orphans!

Location: Feeding Children Everywhere Headquarters, Longwood Florida

The award winning documentary “STUCK” will be shown at the Feeding Children Everywhere’s Orlando office on May 9, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Craig Juntunen, the executive producter of “STUCK” and founder of Both Ends Burning, will be on hand to introduce the film and discuss the orphan crisis. “STUCK” is a film that highlights the plight of institutionalized orphans throughout the world within the context of the US system of International adoption policy that is failing. Over the past 9 years, international adoptions have dropped steadily from almost 23,000 in 2004 to only 7,094 in 2013, while both orphaned children and adoptive families remain isolated as victims of failed international policy.

Following up on the success and momentum of the “STUCK” movie and tour in 2013, BEB has supported adoption reform legislation through a bill know as CHIFF (Children in Families First), which currently has 59 c0-sponsors in the House and Senate. BEB is also seeking to work with foreign child welfare departments to find solutions for children living outside of family. To that end, BEB has announced plans to host a global symposium on child permanency  in November 2014 at the Harvard Kennedy School. All proceeds from A Night for Orphans will be dedicated to the permanency conference. BEB is a 501 (c)3 charitable organization that is dedicated to defending every child’s human right to a family. BEB seeks to serve orphaned children through advocacy, legislation, and domestic and international collaboration.

A Night for Orphans is co-hosted by Rick & Jennifer Gerth and Don Campbell. Rick and his wife Jennifer are both advocates for adoption and stakeholders for Both Ends Burning. They are in the process of adopting international and hope to get more people in Central Florida involved with the growing “Unstuck” movement. Don Campbell is the Founder and “Chief Encouragement Officer” of Feeding Children Everywhere. Campbell and his wife, Kristen, have opened their hearts and homes to children for years; instilling this culture into the fabric of their family and careers.

According to Craig Juntunen, “I have been in 63 cities from coast to coast with the film in similar events, and I consider it a privilege to be in Orlando. My experience from the STUCK tour says that these events become much more than a screening of a film, they are community bonding experiences, where fellowship and compassion collide to produce and emotional and meaningful evening.”
