Family Program - Families Helping Military Families

Location: University of Central Florida, Orlando FL

The Family Program at UCF is working on understanding family stress and resiliency. We are inviting families to aid us in understanding stress and resiliency by participating in a one-time assessment study. In addition to helping other families, your family will receive an assessment of stress and family functioning and financial compensation of $100, ($20 at assessment and $80 at the completion of participation). This includes a clinical interview, questionnaires about mood, anxiety, and stress, and, for the children, collection of saliva samples and monitoring of sleep using a special wristwatch. The majority of the assessment is completed at home in about 7 minutes a day for one week. All of the information collected will be used to help our military families get the resources they need to cope with deployment periods.

For more information or to make an appointment to participate, please call or email Theresa Trombly at: 407.823.1063 or Theresa.Trombly@ucf.edu. This research program is running for the next six months to a year.

Who qualifies to participate:

  • Military families with children 7-17 who have: A currently deployed military service adult caregiver (for 30 days or more) One or two non-deployed military service adult caregivers
  • Civilian families with children 7-17 who have: Two adult caregivers living in the home. One caregiver that is currently working away from the home (for 30 days or more). Experienced or are undergoing marital separation or divorce (in the last 12 months).

And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations

Location: The Orange County Regional History Center, Orlando FL

And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations | February 7 – May 3, 2015

Using the powerful medium of story quilts, “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations” narrates nearly four centuries of African American history, from the first slave ships to the first African American president and beyond. Through 69 quilts from more than 60 artists of the Women of Color Quilters Network, the exhibition reveals the stories of freedom’s heroes, ranging from Phillis Wheatley to Frederick Douglass to the Tuskegee Airmen.

Story quilting is an art form that has derived in part from a long, rich history in Ohio and goes beyond the simple quilting patterns many people may be familiar with. Story quilting expands on traditional textile-arts techniques to record, in fabric, events of personal or historical significance. Through the accessibility of their colors, patterns and symbols, the quilts of “And Still We Rise” relate narratives that enable conversations about sensitive topics from our national history, furthering the discussion of racial reconciliation in America.

Exhibit Hours – February 7-May 3, 2015
Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday: Noon-5 p.m.

Cost: Admission is $12.

Be the Best that You Can Be – Become Healthy and Lean in 2015!

Location: Wildwood Community Center, Wildwood Florida

Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit
New York Times Best Selling Author and speaker, Drew Manning and his wife Lynn will be speaking at two locations on March 3, 2015. Drew is the author of Fit 2 FAT 2 Fit. Whether you are athletic, into fitness, want to shed some weight, or want to become healthier and a little more fit, you will want to hear this talk! Drew and Lynn will inspire you and share with you their simple plan to accomplish your weight loss and fitness goals.

Personal trainer Drew Manning, a self-proclaimed fitness addict, started a weight-gain journey in 2011 to better understand how hard the road from unhealthy to healthy was for his clients. He spent six months without exercise, living a restriction-free, typical American diet. During those six months he gained over 75 pounds. He then committed himself to shedding the pounds and getting back in shape. Drew chronicled the details of the process on his website, Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit with the hopes that his experience would help him and others better understand the emotions, difficulties and victories around weight loss. Shown here is what Drew’s totally fit body looked like when he started his journey, after 6 months of eating and not exercising to get fat, and after 6 months of getting fit again. Drew designed a plan that took him from Unhealthy to Healthy and Fat to Fit!
