RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT HELPS MARK AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S 100TH BIRTHDAY
On Saturday, April 20th, 2013 more than 23 teams and more than 400 walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Lake Buena Vista gets underway. When teams will gather at Reedy Creek Fire Station #4, 1920 East Buena Vista Drive, Lake Buena Vista, Florida on April 20th at 1 p.m. participants will be helping the Society mark a major milestone in the fight against cancer.
“On May 22, the American Cancer Society celebrates 100 years of saving lives from cancer and creating a world with more birthdays. It’s the progress we’ve made together – as a community, as volunteers, as survivors and as leaders – that has helped us reach this incredible milestone with tremendous success,” says Heather Maloney. “By lending your support to the Lake Buena Vista Relay event this year, you’ll be lending your support to the Society’s efforts to finish the fight and bring an end to cancer as we know it.”
During Relay For Life events, participants camp out overnight at a local school, park, or fairground, and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relay events take place overnight, lasting 18 to 24 hours in length.
Relay For Life is a family friendly environment filled with food, games, activities and local entertainment. You can sign up your team today at relayforlife.org/lakebuenavistafl. Relay begins with our Survivor Victory Lap and survivors can sign up online at or onsite at the event. Survivors and Caregivers are our Relay royalty, so please join us as we cheer them on!
One of the most touching moments during a Relay For Life event is the Luminaria Ceremony which takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bears the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased for a donation by calling 407.581.2510 or by visiting Relay For Life Lake Buena Vista.
Also a part of the Lake Buena Vista Relay For Life event is the Fight Back Ceremony, in which a community leader will inspire Relay participants with her own commitment and will challenge them to take a personal pledge of action (e.g., stop smoking, eat more healthily, exercise regularly, etc.) in fighting back.
Funds raised at Relay For Life of Lake Buena Vista help the American Cancer Society get even closer to bringing an end to cancer as we know it. To learn more about Relay For Life, please call 1.800.227.2345 or visit Relay For Life.
