On February 2nd, 2007 a series of devastating tornadoes hit Central Florida at a time when most people were asleep. It was just after 3 a.m. when the storm began its march across Sumter, Lake and Volusia counties. Without tornado sirens in Central Florida to help wake people, Z88.3's Dean O'Neal recruited those who were listening at that moment to call family and friends who were in the path of the storm and wake them up. Based on the stories told by many of the survivors, this effort appears to have been successful.
Z88.3 felt strongly that lives were saved that night as a result of those phone calls, so we created a campaign titled Wake-A-Friend. Z88.3 wants to make sure that you are ready to make those calls again at a moment’s notice during future severe weather outbreaks. If you and your family are safe from any immediate danger, we will be asking you to call anyone you know that might be in the path of a severe storm and wake them up. By waking a Friend, you may be saving a life.
One thing you can do right now is to prepare a list of friends and family that live in Central Florida along with the county and city they live in and their home phone number. We have provided a form for you to create your phone list of friends and family. When completed, post this list some where in your home like next to a phone or on your refrigerator for quick access. During severe weather your phone call may give friends or family the precious minutes they need to get to a place of safety. Wake-A-Friend is just one more way that Z88.3 can stand with you to help you keep your family safe.
