Davenport Pumpkin House Fights Cancer

Location: Davenport Pumpkin House, Davenport FL

This year, the Davenport Pumpkin House celebrates another year of scaring cancer for Halloween and this year a little pumpkin goes a long way for cancer research. The spooky spectacle has increased from 316 to more than 500 hand carved craft pumpkins; all to raise money for the Moffitt Cancer Center. New this year, people can sponsor a pumpkin carved with the cancer awareness ribbon and featuring a name of their choice as part of the display. Christopher Bailey, the person behind this endeavor, is hoping to raise funds for cancer awareness and as a thank you to Moffitt for the care they continue to provide for his wife Adriana.

After a year of continuous coughing and multiple treatments for expected allergies, in July 2017 Adriana was diagnosed with Stage IV adenocarcinoma – a type of lung cancer not caused by smoking.

After eight rounds of chemotherapy and additional testing, it was determined she has an EGFR mutation, an uncommon type that would not respond to any FDA approved treatments.

That’s when they found out about clinical trials taking place at Moffitt Cancer Center. Although the first treatment only lasted eight months, Adriana has been on the same clinical trial since December 2018. This new treatment, a daily pill, continues to stabilize the disease allowing Adriana and Christopher to celebrate life every day.

“The hope Moffitt provided us, as well as the care they continue to provide, is the reason I want to give back, but I need help from the community,” says Bailey.

Christopher is using his display of pumpkins to raise money for Moffitt. This year he’ll display more than 500 craft pumpkins he’s carved over the past three years. This year, the community is invited to sponsor a pumpkin as part of the Great Pumpkin Fence. For only a $10 donation, Christopher will carve a pumpkin with the cancer awareness ribbon and write a name of your choice on the pumpkin for display.

“This year, I want to showcase the art of pumpkin carving and the compassion of the community. In the years ahead, I hope to carve 1,000 more pumpkins, all sponsored by people who, together, want to stand up to cancer by supporting Moffitt .”

The display can be seen every night through Halloween with special projections on October 26, 27 from 7pm to 9pm and especially on Halloween night. For more information or to donate, visit https://www.facebook.com/donate/406631866900174/408815340015160/
