LiftUp Young Lives Golf Tournament

Location: The Majors Golf Club, Palm Bay FL

LiftUp is designed to help young people realize their purpose and give them the tools they need to succeed in life. This program is intended for teens and young adults who are aging out of foster care, homeless, or rescued from human trafficking.

The curriculum is specifically designed for young people transitioning to future education and adulthood. Completing the program will help students unlock their potential and promote balanced personal development in five different areas of growth which we call success pillars. LiftUp was developed to facilitate the training concepts of instruction, mentoring and practical experience.  Everything we do is built upon this foundation, and these five areas–social skills, life skills, leadership and professionalism, financial responsibility, and spiritual growth– are the pillars that excellence is built on.

On December 9, 2020, the second group of teens completed their training.  While LiftUp is now a 501(c)3 organization, it began in 2018 as an outreach of Holy Trinity, Melbourne. Now LiftUp is partnered with the parish, which continues to host the program. Holy Trinity’s clergy and LiftUp Instructional Team members lead classes. Parishioners are on the instructional team. Parishioners and community leads make up the Board of Directors.

Due to COVID 19 safety precautions, this class did things a little differently. “Most classes were held online so the students could complete the entire program,” said Lisa Soloway, Director of LiftUp and a Holy Trinity parishioner.

Also, due to the pandemic, graduation will take place at a later date.

The intensive two-part training program meets twice a week for 15 weeks each semester. One session focuses on life skills, and one focuses on the Christian life. Holy Trinity’s clergy and LiftUp Instructional Team members teach the sessions. “Students’ lives are changed in a positive direction,” explained Soloway. “One of our most recent students was a runaway from many foster care homes and agencies. Despite some ups and downs, she completed the program. She is on a wholly different path in life now, thanks to what she learned and all the caring volunteers.”

Building relationships is a crucial part of life and can sometimes be a challenge. In Level 1, LiftUp incorporates the book Success for Teens: Real Teens Talk About Using The Slight Edge to help young people in the program learn good social habits. “These habits will help build social growth and promote good self-evaluation, reflection, and self-improvement in everyday life,” said Soloway.

Through two semesters of LiftUp, students learn how to present themselves in the business world and how to be viable candidates to potential employers. The program incorporates the importance of first impressions, resume building, presentation skills, and leadership.

Today, earning money is not good enough. Students have to be good stewards of their earnings. Students learn the concepts of spend, save, and share. LiftUp teaches the importance of budgeting, getting and staying out of debt, building credit, investing, etc. “These skills will give students the ability to thrive in the financial market instead of just staying afloat,” said Soloway.

LiftUp is a Christian-based organization that understands the importance of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. “In Level 1, we use the Alpha Course for Teens as a way to invite the students into a relationship with Jesus Christ,” explained Rev. Pam Easterday, Co-Rector of Holy Trinity. ” It is a great opportunity to share the Good News. “One student in our first group decided to be baptized and to have her child baptized.”

“In Level 2, we encourage the students to take the Christian faith to a deeper level,” added Easterday. “We teach four sessions based on The Case for Christ book and movie. We also teach about the sacraments, an overview of the Bible, and a Bible journaling method called SOAP. Our hope is that they will develop a daily devotional practice that will continue to nourish their faith long after they graduate from LiftUp.”
