“This is a class that God has given me a passion to present to today’s youth. I have taught this class for many years and it is my joy to see my students learn the scientific and historical evidence for our Christian beliefs. Upon completing this class, students will be able to not only tell you what they believe but they will tell you WHY they believe it and will be able to defend their faith to anyone who asks them. The Bible explicitly tells us to be prepared to answer questions that people may have about our faith.” – Mrs. Joanne Whitaker
1 Peter 3:15
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect
Christian teens find themselves in the midst of a spiritual battlefield as they walk through the halls of secular high schools and colleges; as many are not prepared to effectively defend their faith – unprepared to respond to tough questions and challenges from the opposition; both professors/teachers and other students.
By learning Christian Apologetics, students can confidently articulate not only what they believe, but WHY they believe it.
The movie, Gods Not Dead based on a true story – it gives us a glimpse into the college classroom and the challenges that our Christian youth are facing.
|Apologetics in the Bible
Apologetics is Pre-Evangelism
What is Truth?
Does God Exist?
Creation a literal 6 days – hard evidence
Evidence that rebukes Evolution
If God Exists, Why Evil?
Are Miracles Possible?
Evidence for the reliability of the Old and New Testament
Evidence for Jesus the Messiah
Evidence for Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection
Evidence for the Trinity
Evidence for The Flood
Evidence for Dinosaurs
Christian Apologetics is not listed as a spiritual gift for teachers, preachers, or evangelists. Rather, all Christians are called to be ready with an answer
Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.”
C.S. Lewis famously said “Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy must be answered… The learned life then, is for some, a duty.” We are in a war with the hallow and deceptive philosophies of our time: relativism, religious pluralism, naturalism, nihilism, postmodernism, scientism, critical theory, – you name it, it’s all out there.
These things have a major impact on us and the society we are living in.
Our job is to confidently present truth to the world.
Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
It’s important to understand that Christian Apologetics is often referred to as pre- evangelism – because before we can share the good news of the Gospel Of Jesus – we must first answer questions an individual may have that would have to be answered before they can embrace the Gospel. God does not need defending but people need help understanding.
As C.S. Lewis pointed out, the question is not if we are apologists, but the kind of apologists we are. All of us are making a case for Christianity in some fashion or another. The key question is whether we are doing it well.
Apologetics is the Evidence God has given us for what we believe as Christians. Apologetics is a branch of Christian theology; Jesus and his disciples used Apologetics. The term is based on the Greek word “apologia,” which means, “defense.”
“Worldview” refers to what we believe. “Apologetics” is all about WHY we believe it. Students today need to learn about both. The Greek word for apologetics appears several times in the Bible. Usually translated as “answer,” “testify,” “testimony,” and “reason.” Categories of Christian apologetics include the following:
- Textual apologetics—defending the trustworthiness of the Bible, then presenting the content of what it says
- Evidence-based apologetics—presenting external data that provides objective confirmation of the Christian faith (such as historical, archaeological, or scientific facts)
- Philosophical apologetics— exposing the flawed reasoning behind arguments against Christianity.
Christians should be equipped to process Biblically such questions as:
Is there absolute truth? Does God exist? Is the Bible trustworthy? Was Jesus the Messiah? Is there evidence outside the Bible for Christianity? Evidence for the Resurrection, Evidence for a literal six days of creation, Evidence for The Flood, Evidence for Jesus outside the Bible, evidence for dinosaurs, scientific evidence within the pages of the Bible, Evidence for Creation and Against Evolution, and so much more.
Barna Group statistics show that 75% of our Christian Youth will walk away from God and the church by the end of their freshman year. The reason is students are not able to defend their faith; they don’t know WHY they believe Christianity. However, statistics also show that even before college, teens are pondering how Christianity stacks up against competing beliefs.
Statements like, “You’ve got your truth, and I’ve got mine,” or “Jesus was just one of many great spiritual leaders,” have become axiomatic in our culture.
It is vitally important that as parents, we equip our teens so that they are able to stand strong. Christianity is to be believed and followed because it is true. In a world of sincerely held opinions, Christianity comes to us via historical, scientific, and archaeological facts that support everything we believe.
Teens need to be equipped for inevitable intellectual questions and spiritual challenges. Apologetics helps by demonstrating Christianity, showing that it is credible, reasonable and relevant.
1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
Paul, the theologian and philosopher, did not write the above scripture. Instead it was Peter, the fisherman. More than ever before, we must rise to the challenge of his words and equip a generation to “always be ready.” As Christians we ALL need to be ready!
The famous Christian movie, God’s NOT Dead
The story is about a college student having to defend his faith. The first day of class the Philosophy Professor states in class the famous quote by German Philosopher
FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE “GOD IS DEAD”
A Christian student says, he cannot write that and puts God on trial to prove God IS not dead and God does exist … He uses Apologetics to do this. He is able to stand strong in his faith because he is equipped with the evidence
Watch the trailer and see what your teens will most likely have to face on college campus and some high school campuses
