Kicks For Kids 5K Run/Walk
This year five high school sophomore students formed Play For Keeps, a non-profit to help underprivileged kids in Orlando have access to better health, team building, and mentorship through sports and nutrition. The funds raised go straight towards the communities to serve as mentors to the kids. So far this year, the students have donated sports balls to Hungerford Elementary School, mentored kids on the basketball court, donated 300 full stockings at Christmas to the students at Mollie Ray Elementary School and had a successful sports ball drive where the team delivered the balls, spent time playing sports together, and fed the children in the Pine Hills area.
According to Treasurer J.T. Rattigan, “Our goal at Play for Keeps is to change the lives of kids all over Florida and someday all over the country one step at a time. We want to make a difference in the world around us.”
The group’s next big project is a virtual 5K race on Saturday, May 8th with the goal of raising enough money to purchase 300 pairs of sneakers for every student at Mollie Ray Elementary while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Play For Keeps believes that a single pair of shoes for a kid might not seem like a big deal, but it has a tremendous impact for these kids who haven’t had the opportunity to wear a new pair of shoes for years.
