In the midst of a global pandemic that has many organizations down-sizing and scaling back, a local social enterprise focused on sewing and repurposing fabric has emerged and is spreading its wings to help women experiencing homelessness in Brevard County.
The Transformed Shop, in conjunction with the Melbourne Regional Chamber, will hold its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8 at 1230 N. Harbor City Blvd., in Melbourne.
The Transformed Shop is the social enterprise of New Life Mission, formerly Brevard Rescue Mission, a long-term transitional housing program.
“Many of the women in our program have been homeless and
experienced significant trauma,” said Transformed Shop Director
Amy Lyon. “Within the walls of the sewing center, they are supported
in a loving environment as they heal and develop their creativity.”
The women, who are called students in the program, work with staff and volunteers to learn how to cut and sew repurposed fabric and denim. Their wares are then sold in the Transformed Shop, through partner stores
and online at www.transformedshop.com.
“I never thought I’d learn how to use a sewing machine,” said
Keturah Williams, a student in the program. “I’ve made denim earrings,
coasters, masks, scrunchies and bags. It’s so much fun!”
Robin Morrison, who volunteers with the students on a weekly basis, said teaching sewing and helping with projects is rewarding for her.
“I like volunteering at The Transformed Shop because it is a joy to
get to know the students and to spend time with them,” Morrison said.
“I love hearing about how they are progressing through the
New Life Mission program.”
During the outdoor Grand Opening event, six-foot social distancing
guidelines will be respected and masks are requested.
“Grab and Go” lunch bags will be provided.
Tours of the Transformed Shop will be given and items will be available for purchase.
Please RSVP by Oct 5th by emailing: info@NewLife-Mission.org the number of attendees and any meal restrictions or call at 321/480-9100.
