A musical by Stephen Schwartz and a book and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, Godspell features a series of parables from the Gospel of Matthew set to modern music. Drawing from various theatrical traditions, such as clowning, pantomime, charades, acrobatics and vaudeville, Godspell is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love.

The critically acclaimed and widely popular musical opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in a large number of touring companies many times since, including a nine-month run on Broadway from October 2011 to June 2012. Several cast albums have been released over the years and one song, “Day by Day,” from the original cast album, reached No. 13 on the Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1972.

The Port Orange production will be directed by Ted Pack, who is active in local theatre, with musical direction by educator Kim Scaccia, director of the Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church of Port Orange. Choreography is being handled by Pam Paramour, with sound by Jim Ownby. The performance will feature local artists.
