Family Program - Families Helping Military Families


Location: University of Central Florida, Orlando FL

The Family Program at UCF is working on understanding family stress and resiliency. We are inviting families to aid us in understanding stress and resiliency by participating in a one-time assessment study. In addition to helping other families, your family will receive an assessment of stress and family functioning and financial compensation of $100, ($20 at assessment and $80 at the completion of participation). This includes a clinical interview, questionnaires about mood, anxiety, and stress, and, for the children, collection of saliva samples and monitoring of sleep using a special wristwatch. The majority of the assessment is completed at home in about 7 minutes a day for one week. All of the information collected will be used to help our military families get the resources they need to cope with deployment periods.

Who qualifies to participate:

  • Military families with children 7-17 who have: A currently deployed military service adult caregiver (for 30 days or more) One or two non-deployed military service adult caregivers
  • Civilian families with children 7-17 who have: Two adult caregivers living in the home. One caregiver that is currently working away from the home (for 30 days or more). Experienced or are undergoing marital separation or divorce (in the last 12 months).

The Orlando Union Rescue Mission (OURM) will host a Christmas Brunch Banquet at the O.U.R. Mission Men’s Center.  Z88.3 Radio Personality, Suzanne Lynn will serve as the Chair of this event.

Current Needs: The Orlando Union Rescue Mission is collecting the following items during the Christmas season:

  • Gift cards for our resident men, women, children and families. Gift cards can be given in increments of $25.00 from Walmart or Target. Gift cards can be dropped off at O.U.R. Mission Home- 1521 West Washington St., Orlando, FL 32805 Deadline: Wednesday, December 17, 2014
  • Fresh Fruit can be donated the day of the Banquet (12.19.14) and dropped off O.U.R. Mission Men’s Center, 410 West Central Blvd, Orlando, FL 32801 from 7 a.m.-11 a.m.
  • New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at O.U.R. Mission Home, 1521 West Washington St, Orlando, FL 32805 Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Deadline: Friday, December 19, 2014

Lights of Hope


Location: Sand Point Park, Titusville FL

Lights of Hope is an outdoor Christmas lights festival scheduled to arrive in November 2014 (after Thanksgiving) running through Christmas Eve every week Thursday through Sunday night at Titusville’s newly renovated Sand Point Park.

General admission to Lights of Hope will be $5 per person, which can be purchased at the gate. Children under 3 are free.

Lights of Hope will include: 30,000 square ft. walking tour of professional light displays, weekly scheduled live entertainment, Santa, hayrides, kid’s maze, holiday arts & crafts, food vendors, live nativity & more!

Lights of Hope will create a new, fun holiday attraction showcasing the beauty of North Brevard to our residents and neighboring communities.
