Family Program - Families Helping Military Families

Location: University of Central Florida, Orlando FL

The Family Program at UCF is working on understanding family stress and resiliency. We are inviting families to aid us in understanding stress and resiliency by participating in a one-time assessment study. In addition to helping other families, your family will receive an assessment of stress and family functioning and financial compensation of $100, ($20 at assessment and $80 at the completion of participation). This includes a clinical interview, questionnaires about mood, anxiety, and stress, and, for the children, collection of saliva samples and monitoring of sleep using a special wristwatch. The majority of the assessment is completed at home in about 7 minutes a day for one week. All of the information collected will be used to help our military families get the resources they need to cope with deployment periods.

For more information or to make an appointment to participate, please call or email Theresa Trombly at: 407.823.1063 or Theresa.Trombly@ucf.edu. This research program is running for the next six months to a year.

Who qualifies to participate:

  • Military families with children 7-17 who have: A currently deployed military service adult caregiver (for 30 days or more) One or two non-deployed military service adult caregivers
  • Civilian families with children 7-17 who have: Two adult caregivers living in the home. One caregiver that is currently working away from the home (for 30 days or more). Experienced or are undergoing marital separation or divorce (in the last 12 months).

Adventist University Presents "Deogratias Niyizonkiza"

Location: Florida Hospital Church, Orlando Florida

Adventist University invites you to join us for an evening with Deogratias Niyizonkiza, whose incredible story is featured in Tracy Kidder’s bestselling book Strength In What Remains

Deo arrived in the United States from Burundi, East Africa, in search of a new life. Having survived civil war and genocide, he landed at JFK airport with two hundred dollars, no English, and no contacts. He eked out a precarious existence delivering groceries, living in Central Park, and learning English by reading dictionaries in bookstores. Then Deo began to meet strangers who would change his life, pointing him in the direction of Columbia University medical school. Now Deo has devoted his life to healing, starting Village Health Works, a non-profit organization that provides quality, compassionate, dignified healthcare to people in rural Burundi.

The event is free and open to the public. Click HERE to RSVP.
