Family Program - Families Helping Military Families

Location: University of Central Florida, Orlando FL

The Family Program at UCF is working on understanding family stress and resiliency. We are inviting families to aid us in understanding stress and resiliency by participating in a one-time assessment study. In addition to helping other families, your family will receive an assessment of stress and family functioning and financial compensation of $100, ($20 at assessment and $80 at the completion of participation). This includes a clinical interview, questionnaires about mood, anxiety, and stress, and, for the children, collection of saliva samples and monitoring of sleep using a special wristwatch. The majority of the assessment is completed at home in about 7 minutes a day for one week. All of the information collected will be used to help our military families get the resources they need to cope with deployment periods.

For more information or to make an appointment to participate, please call or email Theresa Trombly at: 407.823.1063 or Theresa.Trombly@ucf.edu. This research program is running for the next six months to a year.

Who qualifies to participate:

  • Military families with children 7-17 who have: A currently deployed military service adult caregiver (for 30 days or more) One or two non-deployed military service adult caregivers
  • Civilian families with children 7-17 who have: Two adult caregivers living in the home. One caregiver that is currently working away from the home (for 30 days or more). Experienced or are undergoing marital separation or divorce (in the last 12 months).

And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations

Location: The Orange County Regional History Center, Orlando FL

And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations | February 7 – May 3, 2015

Using the powerful medium of story quilts, “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations” narrates nearly four centuries of African American history, from the first slave ships to the first African American president and beyond. Through 69 quilts from more than 60 artists of the Women of Color Quilters Network, the exhibition reveals the stories of freedom’s heroes, ranging from Phillis Wheatley to Frederick Douglass to the Tuskegee Airmen.

Story quilting is an art form that has derived in part from a long, rich history in Ohio and goes beyond the simple quilting patterns many people may be familiar with. Story quilting expands on traditional textile-arts techniques to record, in fabric, events of personal or historical significance. Through the accessibility of their colors, patterns and symbols, the quilts of “And Still We Rise” relate narratives that enable conversations about sensitive topics from our national history, furthering the discussion of racial reconciliation in America.

Exhibit Hours – February 7-May 3, 2015
Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday: Noon-5 p.m.

Calvary's Hill Quartet in Concert

Location: First Baptist Church of Palm Coast, Palm Coast FL

Calvary’s Hill Quartet has been around since 2005, and while it’s mostly a SE regional US group, based in NC, they have sung from coast to coast. They have ministered at every kind of venue possible from churches, to coliseums, to NASCAR racetracks.

They consider themselves more of a ministry than merely a singing group. At each and every event they include a few short testimonies and explain the plan of salvation in the simplest terms and offer an invitation. Their purpose is to uplift the believer and to win new souls for His kingdom.

They hope to release their latest CD on April 1, 2015. Over the years the Lord has truly blessed this group by opening doors, providing protection on the road, meeting expenses, and rewarding them by seeing new believers at almost each and every concert.

A free will love offering will be accepted.

FREE Asante Children's Choir Concert

Location: Camp Ithiel, Gotha FL

What are you doing April 19th at 7 p.m.? Well, come out to Camp Ithiel and witness the amazing performance of the Asante Children’s Choir.

“Asante” is a Swahili word translated “Thank You” in English. The Asante Children’s Choir is made up of children from East Africa, a region recovering from years of civil war and genocide that have claimed millions of lives leaving thousands of children and women as orphans and widows. The choir is dedicated to spreading love, hope and joy while raising awareness for the desperate plight of orphans and other vulnerable children. Their colorful clothing, pounding drums and sweet voices demonstrate their hope and dream for a brighter future. Their inspirational stories of resilience have instilled hope in the hearts of all those who have seen them perform.

The children who have been rescued from some of life’s most difficult circumstances take pride in expressing gratitude through their music.  Their performances are the true testimonies and living “Thank-You” notes sung to everyone who has invested in their lives giving them great pride and hope for a brighter future.

We are blessed to be able to host such an incredible group of children for a few days next week, starting with a free concert open to the community. We hope to see you here!
