Family Program - Families Helping Military Families

Location: University of Central Florida, Orlando FL

The Family Program at UCF is working on understanding family stress and resiliency. We are inviting families to aid us in understanding stress and resiliency by participating in a one-time assessment study. In addition to helping other families, your family will receive an assessment of stress and family functioning and financial compensation of $100, ($20 at assessment and $80 at the completion of participation). This includes a clinical interview, questionnaires about mood, anxiety, and stress, and, for the children, collection of saliva samples and monitoring of sleep using a special wristwatch. The majority of the assessment is completed at home in about 7 minutes a day for one week. All of the information collected will be used to help our military families get the resources they need to cope with deployment periods.

For more information or to make an appointment to participate, please call or email Theresa Trombly at: 407.823.1063 or Theresa.Trombly@ucf.edu. This research program is running for the next six months to a year.

Who qualifies to participate:

  • Military families with children 7-17 who have: A currently deployed military service adult caregiver (for 30 days or more) One or two non-deployed military service adult caregivers
  • Civilian families with children 7-17 who have: Two adult caregivers living in the home. One caregiver that is currently working away from the home (for 30 days or more). Experienced or are undergoing marital separation or divorce (in the last 12 months).

And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations

Location: The Orange County Regional History Center, Orlando FL

And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations | February 7 – May 3, 2015

Using the powerful medium of story quilts, “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations” narrates nearly four centuries of African American history, from the first slave ships to the first African American president and beyond. Through 69 quilts from more than 60 artists of the Women of Color Quilters Network, the exhibition reveals the stories of freedom’s heroes, ranging from Phillis Wheatley to Frederick Douglass to the Tuskegee Airmen.

Story quilting is an art form that has derived in part from a long, rich history in Ohio and goes beyond the simple quilting patterns many people may be familiar with. Story quilting expands on traditional textile-arts techniques to record, in fabric, events of personal or historical significance. Through the accessibility of their colors, patterns and symbols, the quilts of “And Still We Rise” relate narratives that enable conversations about sensitive topics from our national history, furthering the discussion of racial reconciliation in America.

Exhibit Hours – February 7-May 3, 2015
Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday: Noon-5 p.m.

Cost: Admission is $12.

South Pacific

Location: Central Christian Church, Orlando FL

CFCArts is proud to present South Pacific as its Spotlight Series show for April!

This epic musical romance centers on a group of American sailors and Navy nurses stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. One of the world’s classic and most beloved musicals, Rodgers and Hammerstein masterfully weave together beautiful stories of love and war through such unforgettable songs as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There is Nothing Like a Dame,” and many more.

Different from our large scale Summer Broadway Season concert version production, this will be a creative, immersive, fully staged show in an intimate space. Experience this full-length musical theater masterpiece, directed by Donald Rupe, in a whole new way!

South Pacific will be performed:

  • April 23: 8:00 p.m. (Thursday)
  • April 24: 8:00 p.m. (Friday)
  • April 25: 8:00 p.m.(Saturday)
  • April 26: 3:00 p.m. (Sunday Matinee)

All performances will be at CFCArts’ Central Campus, which is housed on the grounds of Central Christian Church, 250 SW Ivanhoe Blvd., Orlando, 32804. Please park behind the church, going around the left side of the building, and taking care to turn before I-4 entry ramp, which is next to the church’s driveway.

Seating for all South Pacific shows is limited and advanced purchase is strongly recommended. Guaranteed seating can be purchased in advance for $18 (credit card/Paypal) or, if available, can be purchased for $15 at the door (cash/check only). Tickets for Industry Night are just $12!
