In this one-man show, Darryl Reuben Hall portrays 16 characters in the life of Booker T. Washington based on Washington’s autobiography “Up From Slavery”. This 80-minute work consists of original rhetoric, song, dance, speeches, historical dialogue, and visual presentations as we experience Mr. Washington’s rise from slavery, to student, to educator, to national and worldwide leader.
The show has received many accolades, including being selected as a 2019 National Black Theatre Festival Honoree. Audiences have shared their praise:
“Wow…his vocals and dances give us a picture of a man and his journey to establish Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.” (Elizabeth Briscoe Wilson, Retired Lincoln University Librarian)
“This piece evokes deep thinking and a well needed, important conversation on race in America. With many historical shows making their way to the Broadway stage, such as “Hamilton” and “Amazing Grace”, [Dinner with Booker T.] could potentially fit into this trend, and shine.” (Brooke Clariday, Theatre Reviews Unlimited)
