Friends of the Poor 5k Walk

Location: St. Vincent de Paul/Our Lady of Grace, Palm Bay FL / Brevard County

St. Vincent de Paul of Palm Bay is located on the campus of Our Lady of Grace Church on Malabar. Our organization has been serving the needs of the community since 1991. They assist with basic needs such as food, hygiene products, financial assistance, and resources to end the vicious cycle of poverty.

They invite the community to seek assistance through our service center Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 9 am-11:30 am and schedule a home visit on Friday. There they can assess the situation and find where the struggling families need the most assistance. They offer resources, advice, counsel, and food. This is following in the footsteps of St. Vincent who served the poor with compassion, humility, and generosity.

The Friends of the Poor Walk began as a national program with the purpose of providing local Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conferences and Councils the additional funds to help support their special works projects. Today, that philosophy continues, with Conferences and Councils using the funds from this event to help local people living in poverty.

This 5k group walk will begin at SVDP House located at 300 Malabar Rd. SE Palm Bay, FL 32907 and continue around neighborhoods in the hopes of bringing awareness to the local residents. Registration and Vendor Shopping will begin at 8 am, Group Walk at 9 am, Raffle around 10 am. Local vendors will be selling their merchandise and crafts throughout the event. Fees: Walk only is $10, Group Rate of 5 or more is also available, Event T-shirts $5-$7, and Raffle tickets are available for purchase at the event. Race participants can register/pay day of the event. We also can receive registration and payments from Sponsors and Vendors M-T-Th 9-11:30 am at SVDP House.

“Your topic really is a gift to people.  I lost my beloved Mother to cancer and as she was battling, we faced so much of what you’re addressing here.  We received an outpouring of offers to help and “let me know if there’s anything I can do,” etc. and I didn’t realize why it felt inauthentic and laborious responding to them […]  It was exactly as you said…There were hardly any real actionable offerings, it felt like people simply offered to feel like they were doing something without having to really do anything…not consciously of course, but its human nature and the world we live in.  She died over ten years ago and your message STILL means so much to someone like me, because I felt awful for feeling that way but now I am at peace with it.  You could help change the world with your message!!!”  Chrissy M.

“Marla, your message is easy to hear even if someone you love is going through a hard time.”  Carolyn S.
