Smithsonian Exhibition Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente

Location: The History Center, Orlando FL

The Orange County Regional History Center is proud to announce the opening of Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente now through March 18, 2012. Developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian Latino Center, the Clemente family, and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the exhibition is a bilingual tribute to Clemente’s outstanding achievements that takes visitors on a journey into sports history, ethnic pride, and a profound commitment to helping others.

The exhibition features biographical highlights, baseball statistics, rare photographs, and firsthand accounts from the people who knew Clemente best and artifacts obtained from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y. In his 18 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Clemente was an integral part of the Pirates’ World Series victories in 1960 and 1971. He was honored as the National League MVP in 1966 and World Series MVP in 1971; posthumously he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, the first Latino American to be inducted, and awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

While Clemente rose to stardom with his accomplishments on the field, he never forgot his heritage and the prejudice he had faced. He fought for the recognition of his fellow Latino baseball players, helped people in need across the United States and Central America, and held free baseball clinics for children in his homeland. Tragically, Clemente’s life ended at age 38 in a plane crash in 1972; he was flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims.

The History Center is located at 65 East Central Boulevard, Orlando, FL.  Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $9, seniors (60+), students and military with I.D. $7 and children ages 5-12, $6. Historical Society Members and children ages 4 and under are free. Parking is at the Orlando Public Library garage on Central Blvd. For general information, call (407) 836-8500 or visit The History Center.
