5th Night for Freedom

Location: Stetson University, DeLand Florida

Orange City — The H.O.P.E. (Helpers of People Enslaved) Team will host the 5th Night for Freedom on Saturday, April 6th, to raise awareness of the fight against human trafficking and help those rescued in this area receive care and services.

The dinner and auction will be held at Stetson University’s Stetson Room in the Carlton Union Building.  The evening begins at 5:30 PM as the  Silent Auction is opened, followed by a buffet dinner.  The speakers are Linda Leonard-Woods, a survivor advocate for Florida Abolitionist who specializes in working with immigrants who fall prey to sexual exploitation and/or labor injustice and Angela Choque, herself a victim of trafficking.

Leonard-Woods is also the Chair of the Labor Justice Now Subcommittee of the Greater Orlando Human Trafficking Task Force. Choque was born and raised in Lima, Peru. After a divorce, she decided to relocate to Florida to work in the hotel/hospitality industry.  After seeing an advertisement for a recruitment agency, she made a connection but it resulted in a move that would turn her life upside down.  She’ll share her compelling story at the event.

The H.O.P.E. Team works to increase awareness about human trafficking and raise funds to support those rescued in the community.  It is made up of individuals and faith groups including: St. Ann’s Catholic Church (DeBary) Orange City United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Church (DeLand), Our Lady of Lakes Catholic Church (Deltona), First United Methodist Church of Port Orange, River City Presbyterian Church (DeBary) and First United Methodist Church of DeLand.  Other individuals and organizations have also partnered with H.O.P.E. to fulfill the group’s mission. The H.O.P.E. Team has raised more than $50,000 for services to human trafficking victims and held seminars and training, all open to the public.

The proceeds from the dinner and auction will be designated for an organization that provides trafficking victims with restorative care, including counseling and life skills training. Applications for grants will be available May 1st.

The event welcomes the return of professional auctioneer J.D. Hunter in what promises to be an informative and entertaining evening. Doors open at 5:30 pm and tickets for the event are $50. They can be purchased through the website: https://bit.ly/2MQgdpE  or from any member of the H.O.P.E. team. For more information, call Orange City United Methodist Church at 386-775-3068.
